The Ada Lovelace exhibition

Augusta Ada Byron (1815-1852) became the Countess of Lovelace, and was the only legitimate daughter of the poet Lord Byron. Her mother, Annabella Milbanke (Lady Byron), had studied mathematics as a girl and insisted that Ada did too – an unusual education for a woman. Today, Ada is known as an English mathematician and writer. Through her work on Charles Babbage’s proposed mechanical general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine, she is recognised as the first computer programmer.
