Through the glass darkly
Enduringly popular and now into its second century as a literary genre, Science Fiction has been referred to as ‘Scientific Romance’, ‘Speculative Fiction’, ‘Science Fantasy’ or even ‘Scientific Philosophy’ (Sci-Phi). This lecture explores the relationships between scientific discovery and fiction writing which have been present since Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus’ in 1816. It will examine the writing of Shelley, HG Wells, Joseph Campbell, Arthur C Clarke, J G Ballard, William Gibson, Kim Stanley Robinson and Michael Crichton, and consider the relationship between science and story-telling in literature and film.
